Overview

Maintain Work Health and Safety is a unit designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to enhance workplace safety and team efficiency. This unit underscores the significance of Work Health and Safety (WHS) policies, hazard identification, risk assessment, and the implementation of control measures, stressing the crucial role these elements play in maintaining a secure working environment.

Throughout the unit, you will explore various topics, including the legislative framework governing health and safety, the process of distinguishing between hazards and risks, the application of the hierarchy of controls, and the development and communication of work health and safety policies and procedures. The unit is structured to provide an understanding of each aspect of workplace safety, key issues and elements.

By the end of the unit, you will have gained practical skills in identifying and assessing workplace risks, implementing effective risk control measures, and fostering a culture of safety through consultation and communication. You will learn how to liaise with management and team members to promote health and safety, ensuring both compliance with legal obligations and the cultivation of a safe and productive work environment. You will leave the unit not only with a deeper understanding of work health and safety responsibilities but also with the ability to apply best practices in safety management, ready to make a positive impact in your organisation.

Work Health and Safety Rights and Responsibilities - In this module, you'll explore the critical components that ensure a safe working environment. You'll learn about the essence of work health and safety (WHS), understand your rights to a safe workplace, and the legislative frameworks governing health and safety responsibilities.

Identifying Existing and Potential Hazards - In this module, you'll delve into the process of distinguishing between hazards and risks, so that you can recognise workplace hazards to prevent accidents and ensure safety.

Hierarchy of Controls - This module introduces you to the hierarchy of controls, a fundamental concept for mitigating risks in the workplace. You'll learn to identify appropriate risk control measures and apply them effectively by understanding their role in maintaining a safe work environment.

Implementing Controls - In this module, you'll learn about the role of controls in maintaining workplace health and safety (WHS). Starting with the basics, you'll understand why controls are necessary, how to introduce new safety measures effectively, and how to contribute to the workplace health and safety strategy implementation.

Work Health and Safety Policies and Procedures - In this module on work health and safety (WHS) policies and procedures, you'll learn about creating, implementing, and maintaining workplace safety standards. You'll explore the significance of work health and safety policies, emergency procedures, and the importance of staying informed on hazard awareness and risk control.

Safety Consultation and Management - In this module, you'll learn the importance of consultation in maintaining workplace health and safety. You'll explore how to support consultation, cooperation, and communication within your work environment, learn about the Health and Safety Committee's (HSC) role, as well as how to encourage team participation in safety consultations.
